MOUTH GUARDS TO PROTECT
YOUNG ATHLETE'S TEETH

There is encouraging news. The American Dental Association reported that more than 200,000 oral injuries are prevented every year by the use of sports mouth guards. This figure is comforting to dentists, but is counter-balanced by equally bad news. The National Youth Sports Foundation estimates that more than 5 million teeth will be knocked out during sporting activities this year. This loss of teeth will happen to children, high school and college athletes. It may surprise you to learn that with all the bumps, bruises and breaks that young athletes sustain, dental injuries are the most common type of orofacial injury sustained during participation in sports.

At Dentists' Office of the Hudson Valley, in this as in other areas of dental care, we highly recommend preventative measures. Mouth guards are recognized as the kind of oral protection that can shield your youngster from harm. Mouth guards are available at most good sporting stores. There are particularly good ones which can actually be shaped to the youngster's mouth. Should you wish or require a custom-made mouth guard, we can, of course, provide that as well. A mouth guard should not interfere with mouth breathing or speaking.
