The Dry Mouth / Bad Breath Connection
Saliva is an important contributor to oral health. It contains enzymes that help with digestion of food. It controls the levels of acid levels in the mouth and it provides high levels of oxygen tissues in the mouth need to stay healthy and fresh.
Dry mouth symptoms are fairly common. People with this condition have less saliva than normal. With less saliva there is less oxygen in the mouth. Less oxygen creates what is called an anaerobic environment, which, unfortunately suits sulfur-producing bacteria really well. Increased sulfur production in the mouth makes the breath and taste worse.
A regular routine of brushing and flossing may help to keep bad breath under control. Routine cleanings and dental examinations are, of course, also important. There are methods which dentists use to control or alleviate the symptoms of a dry mouth, so a discussion with one’s oral health care provider is the first line of action.
