Survey of Senior Patients Yields Important Results
A recent issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association (November 2001) reported the
results of a survey about the endodontic (root canal issues) status in older adults. The survey
verified that as people get older they experience changes in the root canal systems of their
teeth. Although these changes are normal, they can potentially compromise the pulp's of the
tooth's response to injury.
What is even more critical is the fact that almost all the dentists who responded to this
survey agreed that aging patients' teeth are in poorer condition than those of younger
patients. Ours is a continually greying population. People are living longer, so that we,
as your dentists, are ever mindful that we need to understand the physiological changes
occurring in the teeth of our older patients' teeth and make every effort to help patients
keep their natural teeth.
We wish to stress to our senior patients that maintaining healthy teeth and gums is not an
issue for young people only. If anything, this study indicates, that we need to continue to
work in partnership with you, to be mindful of and make every effort to keep your teeth in
their best possible condition, so they will serve you well for a long, long time.
