Tooth Crowns in Lake Katrine

What Is a Crown For Teeth?

Dentists use a tooth crown when tooth decay is too severe to be treated with a filling. A crown, as the name suggests, is a custom-fitted cap that fits over the damaged area. They are designed to look as much like a natural tooth as possible, and many types of porcelain crowns are extremely realistic. While crowns are most commonly used to treat tooth damage, they are also used as cosmetic improvements for patients with crooked or misshapen teeth.

Do Tooth Crowns Require a Special Kind of Dentist?

Crowns will most likely be in the repertoire of any dentist. The dentists at our practice are all experienced in the dental crown procedure, as well as many other types of treatments. They are some of the most highly qualified dentists to help you explore your options for finding the right kind of tooth crown in Lake Katrine.

What Kinds of Crowns Do Dentists Use?

Some tooth crowns are temporary, and they are prefabricated from plastic or steel. These temporary dental caps are used to protect your tooth while dental laboratory technicians fabricate a custom tooth crown.

Permanent crowns are usually made of a ceramic material. Porcelain is the most common material used. A ceramic crown looks just like a normal tooth. However, they may chip if the patient experiences impact to the tooth or habitually chews candy, ice, or other hard things.

Crowns may also be made of metal alloy, which is usually gold mixed with tin, copper, and other metals. This formula is designed to produce a crown that is resistant to breakage and chemical corrosion. Many people prefer to avoid gold for their front tooth crown, but it can be a good choice for a molar crown.

A newer type of crown is made of porcelain fused to metal. This is essentially a thin shell of metal with porcelain bonded to the outside. For some patients, it offers the benefits of both ceramic and metal crowns for teeth.

What Factors Affect the Cost of Crowns?

To give a proper estimate of the dental crown cost, a dental exam is necessary. The dentist must first assess the extent of the tooth damage. Next, they will factor in whether they will create a porcelain or gold crown tooth. When you come to our office for your visit, remember to bring your dental insurance information; your plan may reduce the amount that you pay for the procedure.

How Does a Dentist Put Crowns In?

First, the dentist will carefully grind off any damaged tooth material. He or she will also create a clean margin so that the crown can form a tight bond with the tooth. After this step is completed, the dentist will take a mold of your tooth and fit it with a temporary tooth cap made of plastic or steel. The mold will be sent to a dental laboratory and used by dental technicians to make the crown. Upon receiving the crown, the dentist will remove the temporary crown and put in the permanent one using dental cement.
